Well the deadline came and went and with good luck Alison and I managed to catch the girl collecting posters as she left for the day. With a generous donation from HOK and Cowtown printing I managed to print our posters on high quality card stock for the event/competition. I thought they looked quite good and hopefully you all will see them up around KC in the coming months. The next portion of the effort is the Exhibit and Reception which will take place Tuesday October 21st at 6:00pm. That is tomorrow and since the website is a little less than clear about where this event will take place, I have inquired and will post when I get a reply. Until then take a gander at our posters including one from Ms. Lesley Hunt.

Nice Kicks

20Oct08

I got a recent comment on here from Matt at Nicekicks.com, a site I frequent for sneaker news, regarding linking my stories to theirs and asked if I would add them to my blogroll (see right side). I figured I could do a little better than that and make a post for them so all of you would take a look.

There are many online authorities on sneakers and streetwear, but few have the coverage of all things shoes like Nicekicks.com. From Jordans to Converse, this site has lots of daily posts regarding sneaker drops, interviews and even a little speculation. Be sure and check them out, especially if you are checking out for those Jordan Countdown packs.

I have my fair share of high tops and the majority of them are Nike, which for me is not really a problem. I have been looking for a pair to branch out though and saw these on the interweb this morning and was smitten by the style but a little hopeful for the future in the colorways. Not to say that these are terrible but they could be better. Oh well they are in Japan and out of reach anyway. Dope though….love that swoop behind the toe cap. Cop them here.

I got a little worried when I saw the photo (not the one above) for this feature over at men.style.com that advertised and article about how to know if you have d-bag hair. After going through the slideshow I laughed my ass off and realized I am safe, as long as I don’t go back to the blonde tips. What was I thinking? Then again what are you possibly thinking, check it out here. Sorry to ruin it but the photo above is the first one in the slideshow.

Nike has been giving it up to the ladies recently with the recent drop of the 2009 AM 90’s, well once again the are dropping some heat for winter with a Blazer and a Air Max 1. With materials like ripstop nylon, canvas and leather they will hold up for the winter and even have vintage emblems of a snowflake and pinetree. Keep an eye out for these.

I know I posted a pair of these last week but I am feeling this colorway and didn’t really give any sort of information on Alife so without further ado.

From Freshness magazine: The ALIFE team has set a new precedent for chic, urban clothing boutiques the world over. Situated next to Alife Rivington Club, the new Alife store is exactly what the Alife consumer wanted from the brand/store. It combined a fishtank of piranhas with the Alife brand in such a seamless fashion that it achieved that which is the essence of the store, the brand, and the lifestyle as a whole: effortless cool.

Available now with two other colorways at Caliroots.

As part of my debilitating attraction to the internet and all that it holds I feel obligated to click links if something piques my interest slightly. Sometimes it turns out badly (I get an email from IT) or I find a great site like Acquiremag.com. Sure there are plenty of sites that feature cool things to purchase but this one has the price point set in front of you so you don’t waste your time clicking through 95 pages. I also really enjoy their variety of (crap i don’t need) to buy. From cologne to snowboard goggles; if you are buying me a gift, go here.

In a rather confusing tracking down of the facts I have gathered that Arizona senator and Republican Presidential candidate John McCain admitted that he is a rather large fan of ABBA, a swedish pop group active between 1972 and 1982. Apparently he was asked to create a Top 10 favorite songs and at number 1 was ABBA’s Dancing Queen.

I don’t know if this will sway your vote or overall opinion of Mr. McCain but if you have never heard ABBA you might want to avoid it completely. I will also note that Illinois senator and Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama selected the Fugees “Ready or Not”.

Call me ridiculous but I think this takes precedence over any of the other issues and I will be making my vote based entirely upon this and the rest of their picks, see them by clicking below.

Apple released the new Macbook Pro today and geesus it is gorgeous. Carved out of a single piece of aluminum the new MacBook Pro laptop is simple and streamlined with a brushed surface. The construction also makes MacBook Pro more durable than ever. It’s more power efficient as well as boasting being mercury and arsenic-free, so it’s greener, which is of course a huge selling point now. I also found it interesting that they have re-introduced Firewire 800 as an alternative to USB as they took it away from Ipod functionality years ago. It is supposedly faster than USB so to me it didn’t make sense, glad to see they noticed the error of their ways. Of course everything is new, the keys, the graphics card, but the most forward feature is the addition of the ExpressCard/34 slot which enables use of 3G internet access, meaning internet anywhere. They are shipping now at Apple.

I’m not a huge fan of vinyl toys but I would definitely get these.

Part of a box set release with the recent Alive 2007 live album.

So I am fairly confident that everyone has heard of MK12, the local motion graphics house that lists such clients as MTV, Budweiser, Adidas and AMC. Well it had been a little while so I checked out their site (which is of course beautiful and simple) and I found a large amount of work (motion and print) I had never seen before. You also might want to check out their news section which mentions that they are hard at work on the opening sequence for the aforementioned and soon to be released Bond film, Quantum of Solace. So if you are in need of some inspirado and want to be jealous of some people who have cool clients and interesting work check them out and be proud they are KC folks.

Now available: Ak-47 bullet ice cube tray. For those of you having a Quantum of Solace party come November 14th.

Looking good Billy Ray. Full re:view to come later this week…

People with “balls” in their last name.

GREAT BEND, Kan. —  A Kansas man whose girlfriend was physically stuck to the toilet in their home wins $20,000 in the state Lottery — for the second time this year.

Kory McFarren of Ness City cashed in his winning $2 Bonus Crossword ticket in Great Bend Monday. On July 29, the 37-year-old McFarren received six months of probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor mistreatment of a dependent adult.

McFarren called Ness County deputies in February to report that his girlfriend, Pam Babcock, had refused to come out of the bathroom for two years. Authorities found her stuck to the toilet.

Medical personnel estimated Babcock had been on the toilet for at least a month and said the seat had adhered to sores on her body. She was released from a Wichita hospital after several months of treatment.

DNR, the fashion industry standard for news, fashion trends and business strategies, recently released an article forecasting the 8 trends we can expect for men’s denim in the coming year. Since DNR is a leader I imagined that this article would be pretty interesting, however it pretty much reads as a 8 steps of duh if you have been paying attention the world or fashion at all.

As far as I can break it down companies are going to start making more middle and lower price point denim to account for the financial crisis while making still higher end product for those who haven’t been devastated. Also interesting is the claim that looser fits will return. While most of you, myself included, just had a JNCO flashback the implication is a baggy fit by comparison to the skinny jeans that have been so popular.

Beerfest No. 2

13Oct08

Ok so it’s Monday and the week has just begun but I hate the work week and am already thinking about this coming weekend. Coming Saturday to the Legends shopping center is this years second installment of KC Beerfest. I attended this event last year and the first 2008 event at Power & Light and both were a ton of fun. If you are a beer connoisseur or love drinking all you can for $25, this is the event for you. Proceeds benefit the KC Free Health Clinic and AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City.

The Legends at Village West Shopping Center

“America is a land where a citizen will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, and won’t cross the street to vote on a national election”

(Bill Vaughan, Journalist, Kansas City Star 1915-1977)

For all you designers who are passionate about politics get your ass in gear and start designing posters for this years AIGA: Get out the Vote Poster exhibition.

From the AIGA Kansas City website:

“In one of the most important elections of our lifetimes, only half of eligible voters are expected to exercise their voting power. Let’s bring this message to the people through AIGA’s Get Out The Vote campaign. The AIGA 2008 Get Out The Vote campaign builds on the efforts made in 2000 and 2004, which placed more than 50,000 AIGA posters in public places in communities across the nation.”

This effort will exist in two events and all participants will have their poster posted around town and shown at an evening gallery event. At the gallery event: ballots will be cast, winners elected and prizes given. Find out more by clicking the link above, submission deadline this Friday, October 17th.

Tastemaker retail shop Urban Outfitters has recently started carrying vinyl according to a recent email. I don’t know if this will translate in their actual stores but online they have started selling a small number of LP’s. Ranging from Jesus and the Mary Chain to Scarlett Johansson’s recent recording of Tom Waits’ covers the vinyl is reasonably priced ($14-19) and usually includes “free” mp3 downloads for digital listening. Nice to see a large retailer bringing back what some would call a dead technology and catering to their audiophile audience. All of the records posted above (the new T.V. on the Radio and My Morning Jacket albums) are also for sale here.
